I feel like this thread is underused, Doesn't have to just be used for fucked up stuff can just be a general want for knowledge, so I figured I'd bring it back to life and let people step into Zachy's computer store.

Hey Zach, I found this link for a spec sheet of my home desktop that I use for games, hw, everyday use, etc.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02481326&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&lc=en&product=4299992
My dad's friend recommended this video card
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125511
and this power supply
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371045
Thoughts and comments? I'd really like to hear what you think about these recommendations and if you have any of your own suggestions.
Note: money isn't a huge issue so if there's some other better parts that'll work with my rig, I'll take a look depending on the price. I'm comfortable buying stuff in the moderate-high end range of hardware. Also, he said these should be the perfect upgrades, so idk exactly what he means by perfect. Maybe best thing for my rig or just great for the price, not sure.

Although my input probably doesn't matter, it might help to know how you think you'll be using your laptop. Since you'll be in college, are you thinking something more portable? Or are you okay with hauling around your 8 pound gaming laptop?

I don't necessarily want a Mac-Book or whatever the fuck they call that apple laptop, but I also don't want a hulking 8-pounder. That being said, it would be awesome to be capable of playing games on it.. I don't necessarily want it solely for word processing and internet access.

My laptop is great for that, just get the most similar one that is up to date. Running on two years old, for some reason it's starting to get laggy on games. The monitor is huge for a laptop, definitely fantastic. Only downside is it makes it fairly large and difficult to fit inside of most laptop bags.

I'm assuming it's a 64 bit version of windows it'll turn into a monster with these parts,

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139040 Power supply I felt your dads friend's choice in wattage was poor and far too low.

His graphics card is solid and fine I'd go with it.

And I highly recommend a ram upgrade http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231568

Do NOT just add that ram to your other ram remove your other ram because of two reasons,

1. Computers hate having mixed brands of RAM it's been awhile since I researched why but I just know they do so don't do it.

2. Your motherboard only supports a man of 16gb of ram anyways which is what that is.

If you have any other questions ask away.
Still need top dollar from Luke.

Yeah, it is 64 bit windows 7. What's a man of 16gb of ram mean?

I meant a max* of 16gb Masta sorry.

And Luke you can get a killer laptop with that.

Whatcha that seems like a solid laptop in that price range.

My friend has that laptop. I highly recommend it, if that's your budget. The battery life isn't perfect but it can do whatever you throw at it. If you want something you can carry around to class for 10 hours, it is not the laptop for you.

I mean surely if you just turn it off and conserve battery..? I'm not all that worried about battery life, come to think of it.

That looks like a pretty dope laptop. I'll show my dad that link; the sooner I can get a computer that functions better than this one, the better.

The battery should be fine as long as you don't use it for more than 2 or 3 hours straight and it'll last forever plugged in.

I found myself at college just using my laptop at home anyways to actually DO assignments compared to taking notes on the laptop, that and I used it for my lunch but that's all I needed it for.

We're getting a new deck installed shortly after completing our new kitchen..

Still no hope on a new computer of any sort.

You're going to need one period for college no if, ands, or buts, literally everything needs to be done on a Microsoft program like word excel power point, so on top of a new computer you also need Microsoft office, so yeah gonna have to tell your parents some shit's just more important but I guess I can't judge I don't know the whole back story behind the new kitchen or deck.

Yo! So my actual laptop budget is $800. What should I look for in a decent gaming laptop? Also, if you have any recommendations, I am all ears!

This seems to fit all your needs Luke.

Some cons seem to be the battery life and the harddrive, You won't find good battery life in very many gaming laptops let alone for under 800$, also when you get a job you can buy a really good ssd to fit your laptop for 150 bucks or so and that laptop would blaze through everything you wanted.

If you ever did decide on a new HDD/SSD and were worried about installing it/paying someone I could also certainly do it, it's something I enjoy.
